Lecture on ANTIGONE

Genre:
The greatest grief is which we cause ourselves

The tragic hero: Downfall of a signified superior character who is involved historically or in significant events

Plot:
In the battle Thebes, Polynieces fight Etocles who are brothers. Oedipus is the father and Ismene and Antigone are their sisters.
Creon is their uncle who asks not to bury Polynieces because he is a traitor.

Theme:
Concepts presented within the literature are communicated by the author. Dialogue, behaviour, events can be implicit or explicit.
Ones which are clearly explained are explicit
Ones not clear are implicit
e.g Gender inequality is implicit

CHARACTERIZATION:

Antigone:
Traditional, valient, independent, insightful, humble, rebellious, persistent, headstong

Creon:
Orator, determined, religious, self centered, smart, capable, merciless

Ismene:
Obidient, Submissive, loyal, rational, prudent, sympathetic, reasonable

EXTERNAL CONFLICT:
This occurs between Antigone and Ismene. Antigone wants to do the rituals properly to her brother Polynieces. Ismene wants to follow the rule of Creon and not want to go against the kingdom. This is proved in the lines : 45, 50 and 90

INTERNAL CONFLICT:
This is seen inside Sentry. He is afraid to tell things to Creon. He thinks he can be punished for the bad news he is bringing for Creon.  In line 260 it is clearly mentioned that he is afraid of bringing the news. In line 247 he is conflicted that he may be punished if Creon gets to know the news from somewhere else.

Here is a quick summary for the play Antigone:
