Lecture on THE YELLOW WALLPAPER


This short story is written by Perkins Gillman. She is the one who raised against the condition of women. She thought beyond the two aspects of women by which they were seen. Women were seen only good for cooking and cleaning.

  • She was an American sociologist, novelist and short story writer
  • Accomplishments were exceptional for women
  • The Yellow Wallpaper was the best piece she had written
  • She had an emotional collapse after marriage.
Social views and theories: Reform Darwinism and the role of females in society, Race

Imagery:
  1. "Creeps all over the house.....a peculiar odor....it is not bad.....very gentle.....a yellow smell"
  2. A mysterious deep shaded arbors, the riotous old fashioned flowers and bushes and gnarly trees. 
Jane: She is the unnamed narrator but the readers believe that Jane is actually John's sister.

Themes in the story are as follows:
  1. Self expression: Forbidden to write. She wants outlet of her emotions.
  2. Resting Cure: The medical treatment has been criticized.
  3. Descent into madness
  4. Patriarchal oppression
  5. Longing for social and economic independence
  6. Silence
  7. Powerlessness
